Elindította a Beatlest, majd lemaradt
1961 őszén bement egy fiatalember egy liverpooli lemezboltba és az eladó-tulajdonostól kért egy My Bonnie című lemezt. A tulaj nem ismerte a felvételt, de mint agilis üzletember, hamarosan utánanézett. A híres skót népdalt egy Tony Sheridan nevű gitáros-énekes adta elő, akit egy számára ismeretlen zenekar, a Beat Brothers, vagy más néven Beatles kísérte. A történet folytatását jól ismerjük: a lemezboltos Brian Epstein volt, aki hamarosan ifjú földijeinek menedzsere lett és világsikerük kovácsa. A frontember, Tony Sheridan azonban, aki a hét végén hunyt el életének 73. évében, lemaradt a világsikerről.
Sheridan az 50-es évek végén menő rock and roll tinisztárnak számított Angliában. ő volt az első brit muzsikus, aki a szigetországi tv-ben elektromos gitáron játszott. 1960 elején együtt turnézott Eddie Cochrannel és Gene Vincent-tel. 1960. április 17-én a Jóisten vele volt: szeretett volna együtt utazni taxival a turné következő állomására a két amerikai rockerrel, azok azonban elutasították őt. Ez volt a szerencséje, mert az úton bekövetkezett balesetben Cochran szörnyethalt, Vincent pedig életre szóló sérüléseket szenvedett. Tony még abban évben Hamburgba szerződött a Kaiserkeller klubba, ahol a Beatles is játszott, zenekara azonban nem bírta sokáig a németországi gyűrődést, így Sheridan ott maradt magában. Mivel George Harrison nagy rajongója volt, összehozta Tonyt társaival és hamarosan együtt is felléptek a Kaiserkellerben, majd a Star Clubban is. Ezt fedezte fel Bert Kaempfert, a német Polydor lemezkiadó producere és közös felvételt ajánlott fel nekik. Így születtek meg kislemezük dalai, a My Bonnie, a The Saints az egyik oldalon, az Ain’t She Sweet és a Cry for A Shadow a másikon. 1962-ben már közös nagylemezük is megjelent az NSZK-ban ugyancsak My Bonnie címen, a liverpudli fiúk előtt azonban akkor már sokkal szélesebb távlatok lebegtek. Angliában a közös album már csak azután jelent meg, hogy a Beatles világhírű lett.
Sheridan évekig Hamburgban maradt, majd a rock and roll-korszak letűnésével inkább a rhythm-and-blues-zal próbálkozott. A hírnevére azonban örök bélyeget ütött, hogy ő volt a Beatles ugródeszkája. a 70-es évek elején egy német rádióműsort vezetett, majd amikor 1978-ban újra megnyílt a hamburgi Star Club, Tony itt lépett fel Elvis Presley egykori zenekarával. Utolsó lemeze, a Vagabond, 2002-ben jelent meg. Egyszer s mindenkorra a Hansa-városban ragadt, ott is halt meg 2013. február 16-án.
Launched the Beatles and lagged behind
In the Autumn of 1961, a young man walked into a Liverpool record store and asked for a My Bonnie record from the shop-owner. The owner was not familiar with the record, but as an agile businessman, he looked into it. A guitarist and singer named Tony Sheridan performed the famous Scottish folk song who was accompanied by an unfamiliar band, the Beat Brothers, also known as the Beatles. We know how this story continues: the record store owner was Brian Epstein, who became their manager and the stepping stone to their success. The frontman, Tony Sheridan, however, who passed away over the weekend, lived 73 years, missed the global success.
Sheridan was considered a cool rock and roll teen star in the late 50's UK. He was the first British musician who played the electric guitar on the island country’s television. He toured with Eddie Cochrannel and Gene Vincent in the early 60’s. God was with him on April 17th 1960: he wanted to travel by taxi to the next stop on the tour with the two American rockers, but they rejected him. He was lucky, because on the way there was an accident which resulted in Cochran’s death and Vincent suffered lifelong injuries. Tony signed a contract with Kaiserkeller that year in Hamburg, where the Beatles played, however, his band could not take the stress in Germany, so Sheridan was left to himself. As a big fan of George Harrison he brought Tony and his companions together and soon after, they were performing at Kaiserkeller and the Star Club. This was discovered by Bert Kaempfert, the German Polydor record label company’s producer, he offered them a joint record. This was how their single album’s songs were born, My Bonnie, The Saints on one side and Ain’t She Sweet and Cry for a Shadow on the other. In 1962 their joint LP was released in FRG also with the title My Bonnie, before the liverpool boys there were much broader horizons floating. The joint LP only appeared in England when the Beatles were famous world wide.
Sheridan remained in Hamburg for years, when the rock and roll era was over they concentrated more on rhythm-and-blues. His reputation grew and he became eternally famous as the Beatles stepping stone. He led a German radioshow in the early 70's and when the Hamburg Star Club re-opened in 1978, Tony performed with Elvis Presley's former band. His last album, Vagabond, appeared in 2002. Once and for all he remained in Hansa city, where he died on February 16th 2013.
