 Black Sabbath Set Release Date for '13' Album

 Black Sabbath's first album with Ozzy Osbourne in 35 years finally has a release date: '13' is slated to come out on June 11th, according to the latest official update for the band. The news was accompanied by a behind-the-scenes video of Sabbath recording in Los Angeles' Shangri-La Studio with producer Rick Rubin.

"I've been a fan of Black Sabbath my whole life, and getting to come in to work everyday and hearing Black Sabbath play, it stimulates something in me just like when I was 14 years old," Rubin says in the clip. "They just want what's best, and we're all sort of working together to find whatever works best for them."

"He looks like a bit of a guru, but he knows what he's looking for and when he's satisfied with what he's got," Osbourne says of Rubin.

Recorded last fall, 13 finds Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and guest drummer Brad Wilk (of Rage Against the Machine) resurrecting the ultra-heavy sound of early Sabbath records; tracks like "End of the Beginning" and "Age of Reason" stretch out to as long as eight minutes. "I don't know what's going on in the music world," Osbourne recently told Rolling Stone. "My wife mentions bands to me and I don't know what the fuck she's talking about. We just do what we always did."

Although Osbourne describes the new album as "Satanic blues," Iommi's illness isn't the only thing that's changed about Sabbath. Osbourne admits he is no longer the "crazy, raging alcoholic drug addict" he was during the making of his last Sabbath record, 1978's Never Say Die. ("It should've been called I Wish I Was Dead," he grumbles.) And even a new Sabbath song like the provocatively titled "God Is Dead" takes an unexpected turn. "It starts off, 'God is dead,'" Osbourne says, before adding a bit wistfully, "but at the end it says, 'I don't believe that God is dead.'"

Berry Gordy to Receive Pioneer Award From Songwriters Hall of Fame

Few music moguls have had as lasting an effect on popular culture as Motown founder Berry Gordy, whose accomplishments have earned him the Pioneer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Gordy will receive the award at the group's induction dinner June 13th in New York.

"Berry Gordy is an innovator and a visionary," Jimmy Webb, chairman of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, said in a statement announcing the honor. "Yes, he created a label but more than that, he created a genre. Think about it, he pioneered a marketplace for African-American artistry and then he invited the world in to enjoy it. Berry was way ahead of his time; his young and immaculately groomed and dressed artists were among the first to receive media training. Berry Gordy and the Motown sound are essential to the American music story."

Gordy, a songwriter, producer and entrepreneur, founded Tamla Records in Detroit in 1959, which grew into Motown. He built the label into a music empire that launched the careers of stars including Diana Ross and the Supremes, Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5.

The Pioneer Award is the latest in a long line of honors for Gordy, including an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, the President's Merit Award from the Grammys in 2008 and a "Salute to Motown" evening at the White House in 2011. Gordy is also the subject of Motown: The Musical, a new Broadway production based on his life. Preview performances began this week, with an official opening to follow on April 14th.

Gordy will be the second recipient of the Pioneer Award, which was established in 2012 to recognize the creators of musical bodies of work that have had a major influence on subsequent generations of songwriters. Woody Guthrie received the first award last year.

This year's inductees into the Songwriters Hall of Fame are Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Mick Jones and Lou Gramm of Foreigner, Holly Knight, JD Souther and Tony Hatch.

A 84 éves detroiti zenemogulnak ítélték oda a Dalszerzők Dicsőségcsarnoka (Songwriters Hall of Fame) idei Úttörő-díját (Pioneer Award).

A díjátadásra június 13-án egy New York-ban rendezendő díszvacsorán kerül sor.

Gordy közben musical-hős is lett: a Broadway új produkciója, a Motown hivatalos bemutatója április 14-én lesz.

A Pioneer Award-nak Gordy a második kitüntetettje. A díjat 2012-ben alapították, hogy elismerjék azokat, akik a legnagyobb hatással voltak a későbbi dalszerző nemzedékekre. Az első díjazott – posztumusz – Woody Guthrie volt, akinek hatása felmérhetetlen a folk és a rock-zenében Bob Dylantől Bruce Springsteenig.

Ai Weivei metálban utazik

Ai Weiwei-jel kapcsolatban az ember már semmin nem lepődik meg. A világhírű kínai szobrász és installáció-művész, aki tavaly több millió kaviccsal szórta be a londoni Tate Galleryt, most rock-vizekre evezett. És mindjárt a közepébe: egyenesen heavy metal albumot készített barátjával, Zuoxiao Zuzhou-val.

A találékony alkotó énekel a kilenc dalban és ő írta a szövegeket is. Saját bevallása szerint a dalok között akadnak punkos felvételek is, de néhány poposabb is.

Mint a The Guardiannak adott interjúban elmondta, akkor kezdett el érdeklődni a zene iránt, amikor 2011-ben ellenzéki tevékenységéért 81 napig börtönben volt. „Korábban sosem hallgattam zenét. Aztán fogva tartásom idején őreimet majd megölte az unalom, és kérték, hogy énekeljek valamit. Engem pedig nagyon elszomorított, hogy legfeljebb azokat a forradalmi dalokat tudom, amelyeket gyerekkorunkban tanítottak nekünk.”

E felismerés vezette oda, hogy közelebb kerüljön a zenéhez és lemezt készítsen. Szerencsére megfelelő zenésztársakat is talált. A kész felvételt elküldi Elton Johnnak véleményezésre. Azért éppen neki, hogy az énekes tavalyi pekingi koncertjét neki ajánlotta. „Nagyon meghatott az ő jó szíve, zenéjének szenvedélye és ez nagy lökést adott számomra a saját lemezem elkészítéséhez. Előzetes tanácsot nem kértem tőle, meglepetésnek szánom neki.”

Azóta már Ai Weiwei elkezdett dolgozni második lemezén is. Ez lágyabb lesz, inkább szerelmes hangulatú.

Artist Ai Weiwei to release heavy metal album

The Chinese installation artist and sculptor has collaborated on the nine track LP with rock musician and friend Zuoxiao Zuzhou, writes The Guardian.

Ai Weiwei sings on the tracks and also wrote the lyrics. He has said of the content of the record: "Some are like heavy metal, some are more punkish, and some are more pop."

He went on to explain that he became interested in music during his 81-day long government detention in 2011, saying: "To tell you the truth, I never listened to music. Then, during my detention, the guards were so bored they kept saying to me, 'Can you sing a song?' I felt so sad I couldn't sing any except the revolutionary ones we had to learn when we were growing up … It would have made the time seem much shorter."

He continued: "After I came out, I realised I had never really listened to music or sung, so I decided to make an album. I know so many artists and musicians and they were really supportive."

Ai Weiwei has said that he will be sending his album to Elton John – who last year dedicated a concert in Beijing to the artist. "I was impressed by his very warm heart and passion and the expression of the music, so that gave me a clear push for making my own album. I will send it to him and ask his opinion. I haven't asked him for advice – I will surprise him."

Ai Weiwei is already working on his debut album’s follow-up. "It's more like love songs; it will be softer than the first. There's no heavy metal on that one."

Nyilván a 40 romantikus sláger alapján szavazó 2000 felnőtt korú amerikai minta voksait befolyásolta az énekesnő tragikus sorsa, és alig több mint egy év telt el halála óta. Ettől függetlenül valóban gyönyörű a dal, és Whitney soul-éneklésének egyik csúcspontja. A megkérdezettek 38%-a szavazott rá. Ugyancsak az I Will Always Love You áll az első helyen az elváltak, különélők és özvegyek között.

A második helyre ellenben egy igazi klasszikus, az Unchained Melody került. Bár a Righteous Brothers 1966-os változata a leghíresebb, a dal eredetileg egy ma már szinte elfeledett 1955-ös börtönfilm, az Unchained zenéje volt, Alex North írta, aki többek között A vágy villamosa (1952), a Spartacus és a Kallódó emberek (1960) filmzenéjét komponálta. The most beautiful love confession is Whitney Houston’s

Americans love Whitney Houston’s love confession songs. The popular song I Will Always Love You, known from the 1992 movie The Bodyguard is considered an all-time number one love song according to the interviews by Sony Electronics.

Obviously the singer’s tragic death affected the 2,000 American adults who voted for her on the 40 romantic hit records. A little more than a year has passed since her death. Nevertheless, the song is really beautiful and it is Whitney’s highlight of soul-songs. 38% of the respondents voted for her. Also, I Will Always Love You is in first place for the divorced, seperated and widowed people.

A true classic received second place, Unchained Melody. Although the Righteous Brothers 1966 version is the most famous, the song was originally a now almost forgotten 1955 prison film’s soundtrack. Unchained, written by Alex North, who composed A Streetcar Named Desire (1952), Spartacus and The Misfits (1960) composed the soundtrack for the film. The song was performed by many in the next few decades, From Ricky Nelson to Elvis Presley, from the Platters to the Supremes. In third place is another favorite, the 1966 When a Man Loves a Woman, in which the priority is the black soul-singer Percy Sledge, but we also like the voice of Stevie Winwood from the Spencer David Group.

You Are So Beautiful – do we even have to say? This song is probably the modest manly lyrical song by Joe Cocker, the old man always touches our hearts, even the male audience. His song was number 4. The song was originally Billy Preston’s and the Beach Boys' member Dennis Wilson’s. It can be heard on Preston’s 1974 solo album, but Cocker processed it in the same year. It became a true Joe hit in the next decade, when he caught the worlds attention by being mankinds „best air guitarist”.

In fifth place was the Bee Gees, How Deep Is Your Love from the 1977 film Saturday Night Fever. Maybe it's because I don’t like this period of the Gees-boys,  for my part, I feel the Bee Gees have much better love songs. Just a few examples: To Love Somebody, I've Gotta Get A Message To You, Words, Run To Me, not to mention the First of May celebrated eternal love ...

Kövek görögnek Amerikán át és Glastonbury-ben (?)

Igencsak nagy a valószínűsége annak, hogy Mick Jagger júliusban esedékes 70. születésnapján is belecsap a Satisfactionbe, pedig egykor megígérte, hogy főbe lövi magát, ha még 40 évesen is azt kell énekelnie. Szerencsére meggondolta ezt az elhamarkodott kijelentést, és a régi és új Rolling Stones-rajongók is élvezhetik e dalt a hatalmas életműből gondosan kiválasztott programból.

Ezúttal Amerikát gördülik végig a Kövek (oké, tudjuk, hogy a nevük nem ezt jelenti, hanem számkivetettet, mindenki lába kapcáját), méghozzá május 2-án indulnak el, miután tavaly már lenyűgözték London és New York közönségét a „50 and Counting” show-kkal. Sokat beszéltek már a folytatásról és most megerősítést nyert, hogy 18 bulit játszanak a vén rock-csotrogányok Észak-Amerikában. A pontos menetrend még nem publikus, sőt, az első koncertét is csak találgatják, hogy Los Angeles vagy Seattle lesz-e a start, de az sem kizárt, hogy a Keleti Part valamelyik városa.

Ez lesz a Stones első turnéja a 2005-2007-es A Bigger Bang óta, amelyből szerencsére mi magyarok is részesültünk. A tavalyi bulikon felléptek a banda korábbi tagjai, Bill Wyman és Mick Taylor is, sőt vendégként Eric Clapton és Jeff Beck szintén színpadra lépett. Ki tudja, mivel rukkolnak elő az idén…

Az is valószínűnek tűnik, hogy a brit híveknek sem kell a nyarat a Rolling Stones nélkül tölteni. Igaz, ennek még csak közvetlen hírforrásai vannak. Serge Pizzorno, a Kasabian együttes vezetője ugyanis az MTV News UK-nek adott interjúban arra a kérdésre, hogy fellépésük a Hard Rock Calling fesztiválon június 29-én ama hétvége legnagyobb figyelmet kiváltó eseménye lesz e, a zenész így válaszolt: „Az valóságos csoda lenne, mert a Rolling Stones akkor játszik Glastonbury-ben”. Úgy látszik, Pizzorno már tud valamit, amit talán még Jaggerék sem…

'May 2nd is the launch day'

 The Rolling Stones' '50 and Counting' shows in London and New York last year were some of their tightest shows in years. "There have been quite a few offers," Mick Jagger said afterward, weighing a full tour. Added Keith Richards, "Really, all you're going to have to do is wait for an announcement."

The wait will be over soon. A concert business source confirms to Rolling Stone the band is planning 18 concerts in North America this year. Billboard also reported yesterday the band will play "fewer than 20" dates in North America, with Australian promoter Paul Dainty and Virgin music promoting the tour (the team also promoted the '50 and Counting' run). "May 2nd is the launch day," says another source. "I've heard West Coast cities – L.A. And Seattle. But I think they're going to do some back East as well."

It would be the band's first tour since 2005-2007's A Bigger Bang, and, if the '50 and Counting' shows were any indication, the band is even more adventurous these days. Last year they performed with former members Mick Taylor and Bill Wyman, invited guests like Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck and played rarities like "Around and Around" and "I Wanna Be Your Man."

It's looking likely U.K. fans won't miss out on the Stones this summer. When MTV News UK asked Kasabian's Serge Pizzorno if his set at the Hard Rock Calling festival on June 29th will be the most talked-about performance of the weekend, he replied, "Yes, that would be a miracle because The Rolling Stones are playing Glastonbury. I can imagine there will be a lot of people there waiting for them."

UK vinyl market sees 70 per cent increase in 2012

 The value of the vinyl album market increased by nearly 70 per cent in 2012, according to figures from the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA).

As reported by the BBC, sales of albums on the format have been increasing over the five years with the value of the market increasing from £3.4m million in 2011 to £5.7 million in 2012. That figure is up from £1.1 million in 2008.

However, sales of vinyl singles have decreased, with the market worth £0.9 million in both 2012 and 2011, down from £2.2 million in 2008.

"The reason the growth is notable is that, first of all, a lot of people had written off vinyl for dead and, secondly, it compares very favourably with the declines suffered by CD," Kim Bayley, director general of the ERA said.

Earlier this month, The xx's Coexist was named the best-selling vinyl album in the UK in 2012 behind the reissue of David Bowie's The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars and Jack White's solo debut Blunderbuss in third place.

Overall vinyl sales grew for the fifth successive year throughout 2012, with a total of 389,000 LPs sold, according to figures from the Official Charts Company and the BPI. That marks an increase of 15.3 per cent over 2011’s sales of 337,000.
